Open up the July 2010 issue of Marie Claire UK and you will find a feature I recently photographed titled, “Girls with Guns.” The story focuses on women in Virginia who support the Open Carry movement and wear firearms at all times. I spent three days photographing several different women for the piece. It took me a while to get used to Caitlin, 19, and her step-mother, Jadranka, doing every day chores with guns on their hips because it was the first time I had ever seen anything like it. By the time I photographed Michelle and her children I had become much more comfortable. Michelle was from my home state of New Jersey and seemed like someone I could have gone to high school with. The most difficult part of the assignment was that the guns had to be clearly visible in every photograph, but I quickly learned to adapt to and enjoy the challenge. Huge thanks to Caitlin, Jadranka, Carrie, and Michelle for being so open and generous with their time.
